Can you wrap a car with scratches or dents?

Understand which paint defects remain visible under vinyl, why loose paint matters and what to inspect before wrapping a scratched or dented car.

Vinyl changes color; it does not level a dent or rebuild damaged paint. Fine marks, deep scratches and peeling clear coat require different decisions. Start with the condition of the surface, then decide whether preparation, repair or a different scope is needed.

Separate shape from surface finish

A dent changes the contour of the panel and remains underneath the film. A raised chip edge or deep scratch can also show through, especially under directional lighting. Matte material may soften reflections, but it is not a reliable way to conceal damage. Inspect the car clean and dry before choosing a finish.

Adhesion is a separate question

Film needs a suitable, stable surface. Flaking clear coat, corrosion and poorly bonded repairs can create installation or removal problems. Even a visually smooth repaired panel deserves discussion because appearance alone does not establish how well its paint is attached. Provide repair history rather than assuming all panels are factory paint.

Agree on repair responsibilities

Decide who handles bodywork and when the paint system is ready for film. There is no universal waiting period for every repaint; use the refinisher's and film manufacturer's instructions. Document existing defects before installation so the wrap proposal does not silently become a body-repair estimate.

Photograph what the quote needs

Send one whole-panel image and close views from several angles. Identify chips, scratches, dents and any area repaired previously. Motenza can then discuss whether the project should proceed after preparation, exclude a panel or wait for repair. A photo helps scope the conversation; an inspection may still be needed.

Before your next step

  • Show defects in daylight and reflected light.
  • Disclose repainted panels and corrosion.
  • Confirm preparation separately from film installation.
